Drive Clean Rural USA is an 8-state project managed by

Leveling the Playing Field

for Rural America

Local governments, businesses, hospitals, and schools across the country are saving money and enjoying cleaner air by transitioning fleets to U.S. clean fuels and advanced vehicle technologies. But too often, rural communities miss out on these benefits because they don’t have equitable access to information, infrastructure, and financing support.

Drive Clean Rural USA is setting out to change that.

There is no one clean fuel or one path that makes sense for every community. That is why we will provide vehicle demos, fleet assessments, and expert consultation to help rural counties develop practical plans that reflect their fleet priorities, fuel type costs & benefits, infrastructure & financing options, and available federal and state financial incentives.

The Project

Drive Clean Rural USA is an 8-state pilot project funded by DOE. Participating county government and private fleet partners will receive free assistance from Clean Cities coalitions in the eight states and our industry partners.

Drive Clean Rural USA is a 3-phase project that will run through June 2024.

Phase I

Selecting Rural County Partners

GET INFO & APPLY

Drive Clean Rural USA is seeking rural county partners in our eight pilot states that want to become clean transportation leaders.

We’re looking for counties that want to test clean fuels and vehicles, co-host a clean transportation workshop with county fleets and private and institutional fleets in their counties, and work with our experts to develop a cost-saving clean fuel transition plan.

Phase II

Free Technical Assistance
for Rural Partners

BECOME AN INDUSTRY PARTNER

For 12 months, beginning in mid-2022, we will support participating county governments, as well as private sector fleets, hospitals, colleges, and other institutions in our pilot counties, to explore and identify the most beneficial clean fuel options.

Our Clean Cities and industry experts will:

  • Provide assessment and consultation to match fleet needs with best clean fuels and vehicles;
  • Lend clean fuel demonstration vehicles;
  • Educate on public financing opportunities;
  • Collaborate to create a county-wide clean fuel transition plan; and
  • Help identify business and job growth opportunities related to biofuels and renewable methane production.

Phase III

Amplifying Rural Clean Transportation Successes

SHARE YOUR RURAL CLEAN FUELS SUCCESS STORY

In the final year of the project, we will feature success stories and lessons learned in a Replication Playbook designed to help other rural counties save money, deliver cleaner air, and realize economic growth opportunities through clean fuel transportation.

We will disseminate the Replication Playbook nationally through the DOE, Clean Cities Coalitions, industry stakeholders, and the media. We will also spotlight project participants and success stories through media campaigns and speaking opportunities.

Throughout this 3-year project, we want to spotlight examples of rural clean fuel transportation successes.
